Maury Avenue Live Music

Maury Ave. is an energetic outlaw folk duo from Denver, Colorado.

Singer-songwriter Matthew Dempsey earned his grit playing the streets and venues of St. Louis, Missouri. He performs with incredible passion, and his relatable songs are unique and catchy though genuinely rooted in americana. His voice, sometimes beautiful and smooth, sometimes grainy and tough is always soulful. After a stint as the frontman of the St. Louis- based psychedelic grunge band “Where’s the Chief?”, he soon turned his focus to his solo folk writing which blossomed into “Maury Ave.” Matthew’s lyrics are sprinkled with the classic themes of love, passion, and heartbreak then mixed with a modern flavor all his own.

Raised in a home that appreciated soul, blues, folk, rock, country and pop, Mathew loved many types of music from an early age. He has even dabbled in EDM production. Almost as a backlash to being in the EDM scene, he had a calling to return to the purity of acoustic music

Living in south St. Louis on the street Maury Avenue, Matthew struggled with lost love and paying the rent. Whether at work singing into voice memos or up all night at home, Matthew tirelessly (fueled by beer and cigs of course) wrote the songs of their first album, “AmeriKinda”.

His influences and idols include Gram Parsons, Brandi Carlile, Johnny Cash, Simon and Garfunkel, Steve Earle, Richard Thompson, Jimi Hendrix, Bob Dylan, Woody Guthrie, Tom Waits, Father John Misty, Pokey LaFarge, Leon Bridges, The Shins, and The Brothers Reed.

Now settled in Denver Colorado’s burgeoning folk scene, Matthew intends to grow his music and write new material. “The state has an air of freedom,” he says.

Scott Powers, living in Colorado most of his life, compliments Matthew’s infectious hits by laying down the rhythm on the upright double bass. Once they met, there was no turning back as Matthew immediately loved how his songs sounded with a solid acoustic bass line. Scott earned his chops playing with Denver’s own raucous bluegrass/blues band “The Hayward Strangers”. His straight ahead driving sound centers on tone, timing and tastiness and works to balance between knowing when to lay it down hard and when to back off. His influences range from Johnny Cash, Del McCoury, and Steve Earle to The Devil Makes Three and The Wood Brothers.

Together, these guys serve a delicious, modern Americana show that will please any type of music lover.
