Puca Music

Púca Music is the dynamic duo of Dave Firestine and Claire Jamieson Zucker. Songs and tunes from Ireland and Appalachia, plus new music hot off the press. Mandolin, bouzouki, bodhrán, concertina and clogging. The pair has produced a total of 8 cds with various bands. This duo has the chops: Winners of Tucson Area Musician’s award (Tammies) for “Best Female Vocalist” and  “Best String Player” and when with the band “Round the House” they were six time winners of the Best Traditional Ethnic Band award. Veteran performers, they can fill an evening, a stage, a party!  Foot stomping instrumental sets feature the fine musicianship of Dave’s energetic, precise mandolin/bouzouki against the rich heartbeat of Claire’s bodhran.  Songs, both noble and lusty, hit the heart or the funny bone and will send you off humming and laughing.

Claire just can’t seem to stick to one thing – good thing she has a ton of energy and a happy spirit.  She plays bodhrán (Irish drum) with awesome dynamics and tone to accompany Dave’s fast picking. She also adds rhythm with her clog dancing. An accomplished singer, her songs range from the fun tongue twister types to the Irish ballads and Appalachian story songs. Her newest venture is playing the concertina, which gives their tunes a very cool old-world sound. Besides playing with Púca and contradance band STEAM!, she is fine contradance caller, has a passel of workshops she can teach and she is always happiest when a music jam is near on the horizon.

Dave’s cheerful genuine nature spreads across any room he enters. He plays with a driving precise rhythm, specializing in those “grab you” tunes that have unique twists and turns.  Dave plays mandolin, bouzouki, and mandola with Púca and his songs run to the hilarious variety – really!  Besides playing with Púca, STEAM! and the Privy Tippers, he is never far from the nearest jam whether it is Irish, old time, contra – whatever.   He also teaches workshops and music all over the country and is pretty famous as the Carp Camp jam-meister at the Walnut Valley Festival in Kansas (just ask anybody).
